Take Two is a captivating and heartfelt novel by Danielle Hawkins that delves deep into the complexities of relationships, family dynamics, and self-discovery. Laura and Doug's long-term relationship came to an amicable end when their life goals diverged – she yearned for children, while he didn't. The breakup, although painful, seemed uncontentious until Doug's new relationship rapidly progressed into impending fatherhood, causing Laura further heartache. Seven years later, Laura makes a simple visit to Doug's parents, which evolves into an unexpected reunion with her old life. Now, she's entangled in the chaotic lives of Doug, his charming yet irresponsible younger brother, and an assortment of crises. Balancing the management of a farm, running a bookshop, looking after two small children, assisting Doug's wife during labour, and caring for Doug's ailing parents, Laura finds herself re-evaluating her past decisions and contemplating her future amidst the turmoil. Danielle Hawkins delivers a novel that is not only effortlessly readable but also deeply moving and genuinely original. Her narrative sparkles with wit and compassion, skilfully navigating serious themes while keeping the warmth and humour intact.

Take Two is that rare and special thing, a novel that is effortless to read - I sped through it in a day - but is also emotionally genuine and original. Danielle Hawkins is a natural storyteller with a light touch and she doesn't shy away from the gritty and the real. She is New Zealand's very own version of Marian Keyes." - Nicky Pellegrino

“My favourite funny author. I love her work. Take Two is totally on form ... She writes family dynamics brilliantly and I would say with equal parts dry wit and compassion ... She's seriously good. Smart as a whip, really funny, but also very moving.” - Catherine Robertson, RNZ

"Hawkins is reliably kind, drily funny, and observant ... like Jane Austen in Red Band gumboots." - The New Zealand Herald.

'Take Two is light and sweet, but never cloying or sickly. Like getting the tea from your school bestie after you've been out of touch for a few years, accompanied by a slice of your favourite cake.' - Kete Books

This is Danielle Hawkins' best novel yet. Funny, tender, and unafraid to tackle big issues, it will have you laughing and shedding tears in equal measure.
