The foremost Proust scholar of our time offers a brilliantly revised and annotated edition of the first volume of the twentieth century's most acclaimed novel

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Swann’s Way, the first volume of Marcel Proust’s monumental series In Search of Lost Time, unfolds as an evocative meditation on memory, time, and desire. Through the protagonist’s meandering reflections, readers are introduced to the intricate world of 19th century French high society. The novel kicks off with the narrator’s recollections of his childhood in Combray, his delicate relationship with his mother, and the profound impact of a seemingly trivial event – the taste of a madeleine dipped in tea. This sensory experience unravels a tapestry of memories and emotions, setting the stage for a journey through time and consciousness.

As the narrative progresses, it delves into the intertwined lives of several characters, notably Charles Swann, a sophisticated man of society, and his passionate yet tumultuous relationship with the courtesan Odette de Crécy. Proust masterfully portrays the subtleties of human emotions, the complexities of love, and the inexorable passage of time through exquisite prose that has enchanted readers for over a century.

Swann’s Way has been celebrated for its rich characterisation, intricate narrative structure, and profound insights into human nature. The book’s enduring relevance is further enhanced by the scholarly touch of William C. Carter, the foremost Proust scholar of our time, who offers a brilliantly revised and annotated edition of this 20th century literary masterpiece.

Carter’s meticulous revision renews one’s appreciation of Proust’s unparalleled style and diction. His slight but decisive emendations bring the reader closer than ever to the true tenor of Proust’s masterful storytelling, providing a more accurate reflection of the original French text. As extolled by Choice, this edition is “a magnificent and enduring achievement.”

One hundred years have passed since Swann’s Way was first published, and during this time, it has never been out of print, translated into dozens of languages, and has continued to captivate readers worldwide. The initial English translation by Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff was revered for its quality, but with the passage of time, the need for corrections and further annotations became apparent.

To commemorate the centennial of its publication, William C. Carter presents a new, thoroughly revised edition of Swann’s Way. This edition addresses past translating missteps and includes comprehensive notes to illuminate the biographical, historical, and social contexts of the narrative. These annotations, presented in a reader-friendly format, enrich the experience, offering deeper insights into Proust’s intricate world and endearing characters.

Immerse yourself in the eloquent and immersive world of Marcel Proust with this definitive edition of Swann’s Way, carefully refined and annotated by William C. Carter. Whether you are revisiting this cherished classic or discovering it for the first time, this edition promises to be an enlightening companion, deepening your appreciation for one of literature’s greatest achievements.
