Secret Gardens of Aotearoa by Sophie Bannan and Jane Mahoney takes readers on an intimate exploration of some of New Zealand’s most stunning and unique private gardens. The book unveils the beauty and intricate details of gardens that range from hidden suburban food forests to charming flower farms, organic vegetable patches, and expansive station gardens.

Each garden is meticulously described, providing insights into the personal journeys of the passionate home gardeners who have nurtured these spaces. The authors delve deeply into the challenges and delights faced by these dedicated gardeners, highlighting their triumphs and the learning curves they have experienced along the way.

The chosen gardens are celebrated for their diverse styles and the humble, enthusiastic individuals behind their creation. These gardeners, with years of hands-on experience, share their invaluable knowledge, offering practical advice and wisdom that can inspire both novice and seasoned gardeners alike.

Despite their differences, all the featured gardens are united by a commitment to sustainable gardening practices. This includes a profound respect for nature, an emphasis on learning through observation, and a dedication to the principles of kaitiaki, or guardianship of the land. The book underscores the importance of knowledge sharing, showcasing how these gardeners have embraced the spirit of community and environmental stewardship.

With stunning photography and beautifully written prose, Secret Gardens of Aotearoa is more than just a gardening book—it is a celebration of the dedication, creativity, and love that New Zealand gardeners pour into their green spaces. It will inspire readers to look at their gardens with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of purpose.
