Running My Own Race by Abena Eyeson tells the story of Kofi, a young boy whose mother is determined that he becomes 'somebody'. When Kofi is granted a place at a prestigious private school due to his athletic abilities, his life takes an unexpected turn.

Kofi dreams of becoming a professional athlete, but quickly learns that following one's heart is not an easy path. He is under pressure from his mum to capitalise on his academic opportunities, his best friend who fears he might change, his community that wants him to make them proud, and a rival determined to ensure Kofi does not outshine him. Caught in the whirlwind of others' expectations, Kofi finds himself uncertain of where to turn.
