Resurrection is Tolstoy's most controversial novel, narrating the dramatic tale of a remorseful nobleman who seeks redemption after a woman he once wronged is convicted of murder. This gripping story reveals a world of injustice previously unknown to him.

A nobleman confronts the repercussions of his youthful misconduct when the girl he seduced and abandoned years earlier is implicated in a murder case. Initially envisioned as a love story, Tolstoy's final novel, published in 1899, evolves into a dark masterpiece that critiques the entirety of Imperial Russian society.

Resurrection explores diverse settings, from the opulent salons and country estates of the aristocracy to the gritty realities of courtrooms, government offices, brothels, and prisons. The narrative traverses from Moscow and St Petersburg to the remote penal colonies of Siberia, via road, rail, and march.

The novel's pages are filled with a cast of convicts and gaolers, revolutionaries and religious sectaries, soldiers, labourers, and lawyers, as well as peasants, priests, and prostitutes. For Prince Nekhlyudov and Katusha Maslova, the possibility of salvation through love is fraught with difficulties; however, their journey into exile becomes a path of self-discovery and spiritual transformation.
