Ratwhiskers and Me has been praised as a beautifully crafted verse novel that vividly depicts the conditions on the Bendigo goldfields in the 1850s. Lorraine Marwood's economical use of words powerfully conveys the miners' hardships, the prejudice encountered by the Chinese, and the diverse human behaviours during the gold rush, earning it acclaim as a masterpiece.
