Nigel Henderson's Streets celebrates the work of Nigel Henderson (1917-1985), a British artist and founding member of the Independent Group who was also a talented photographer. His photographic work has been compared to that of legends such as Cartier-Bresson and Brassaï.

Introduced to the art world by his mother, Wyn Henderson, the manager of the renowned Guggenheim Jeune gallery, Nigel Henderson became acquainted with influential figures in modern art, including Max Ernst and Marcel Duchamp. After recovering from his experiences as a pilot in the Second World War, he began exploring the world of photography in 1943.

During his time in Bethnal Green, east London, Henderson created an extraordinary archive of photography between 1949 and 1953, documenting the essence of life in the area. This stunning book showcases 150 of these newly digitised photographs, capturing the core of working-class life. From hop-scotching children to funeral processions and street parties celebrating the 1953 coronation, Henderson’s unique perspective illuminates the wit, resilience, and character of the local people.

The photographs not only depict a lively community but also record a way of life that was on the brink of transformation as Britain approached the 1960s. Nigel Henderson's Streets is an essential addition for enthusiasts of modernist photography and aficionados of local history.
