Modern New Zealand Cricket Greats by Dylan Cleaver offers a compelling narrative chronicling the extraordinary evolution of New Zealand cricket through its most glorious era. This captivating book explores how an era of mediocrity transformed into one of dominance and excellence on the world stage, reflecting on the inspiring journey that brought the nation to the pinnacle of international cricket.

In a time when cricket fans were accustomed to fleeting glimpses of brilliance from icons like Sir Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe, the 1990s posed a stark contrast. Amidst a global shift towards professionalisation, New Zealand's cricket team struggled to keep pace, finding themselves overshadowed and largely dismissed as underdogs.

Yet, the seeds of resurgence were quietly sown under the strategic guidance of Stephen Fleming, whose urbane leadership style sowed the roots of a new cricketing ideology. This approach began to flourish vibrantly with the arrival of the dynamic duo—Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson—whose fearless mindset instilled resilience, tenacity, and audacity within the team.

As the team matured and evolved, so did their achievements. The culmination of their efforts led them to four ICC tournament finals. A notable mention is the 2019 ODI World Cup final, where the match ended in a dramatic tie, capturing the imagination and hearts of cricket fans worldwide. Their crowning glory, however, was a historic victory at the inaugural World Test Championship, affirming this period as the most successful in New Zealand's cricketing annals.

Modern New Zealand Cricket Greats celebrates the contemporary heroes who have etched their names in history, shaping the destiny of the sport in their homeland. Through the stories of remarkable players such as Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Daniel Vettori, Shane Bond, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor, Tim Southee, Martin Guptill, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, and Neil Wagner, the book offers insightful profiles that illuminate the unique contributions and enduring impacts these legends have made.

Dylan Cleaver's writing vividly captures the spirit and excitement of this transformative era, making it an essential read for cricket enthusiasts and sports aficionados alike. Whether reflecting on past triumphs or studying strategies that could reshape future games, Modern New Zealand Cricket Greats provides an engaging and enlightening journey into the heart of New Zealand's cricket renaissance.

About the Author

Dylan Cleaver has been obsessed with the summer sport since his earliest days on this planet. The first Black Caps test he covered as a journalist was Stephen Fleming's first as skipper, a four-wicket loss to England at the old Lancaster Park. Long before then, Cleaver had sat on the terraces of his hometown Pukekura Park and dreamt of a cricket career himself, but a lack of talent stymied that. Instead, he has spent the better part of three decades covering the sport for mastheads like the New Zealand Herald, Herald on Sunday, Sunday Star-Times and Sunday News, alongside contributing to overseas publications like The Cricket Monthly and The Nightwatchman. Cleaver has won close to 40 national journalism awards, including Best Investigation at the Canon Media Awards in 2015 for his work on match-fixing allegations involving former New Zealand cricketers. He has been named Sports Journalist of the Year on multiple occasions, including for his ground-breaking work linking the high rates of dementia in former rugby players with head injuries suffered in their playing days. He lives on the North Shore with his wife Michelle and two teenage children Liam and Libby.
