This authoritative reference, the first of its kind, is a necessary addition to the library of any practitioner or behaviorist who sees avain companion animals. Because of their beauty, intelligence, playfulness and ability in mimicry, parrots are the most widely kept companion birds.
Manual of Parrot Behavior explores the complexities of psittacine behaviour, addressing both normal and abnormal behaviours found in birds kept in captivity. Psittacines, such as Macaws, Amazon Parrots, African Grey Parrots, Cockatiels, Budgerigars, and Cockatoos, are popular companions due to their intelligence, playfulness, and mimicry abilities.
In the wild, these birds are typically social creatures, living in groups. However, in captivity, many psittacines are kept alone in cages, which has its pros and cons. While caging can lead to tameness and enhanced mimicry skills, it also contributes to behavioural problems. These include biting, screeching, and self-mutilation.
It is estimated that over half of behavioural issues presented to avian clinicians are linked to these captive conditions. By bringing together international experts on avian behaviour, Andrew Leuscher provides valuable insights into diagnosing and treating these problems effectively.
This authoritative reference is an essential addition to the library of any practitioner working with avian companion animals, offering techniques for understanding and managing the behavioural challenges of caged psittacines.
