George John Markulis: The Mythical Greek God of Coal Mining and Beyond tells the compelling story of George John Markulis, hailed by the author, his second son, as the mythical Greek god of coal mining in Carbon County, Utah. George earned the reputation of being the greatest coal miner in the area, with an unmatched ability to extract more coal in one day than any other miner.

This narrative chronicles his life story, starting with his over 30-year career in the coal mines. It follows his journey back to Greece to marry, his return to America, and how he raised five sons during the Great Depression of the 1930s. During these harsh times, George moved his family from one coal-mining shanty town to another, even relocating to Pennsylvania for employment that ultimately didn't work out. After some years in Pennsylvania, he returned to Utah as job opportunities began to re-emerge.

After enduring an eye surgery that resulted in the removal of one eye due to glaucoma, George retired from his coal mining career and relocated his family to California. There, he embarked on a new venture, running a restaurant business for another 28 years. He passed away on December 1, 1985, just 37 days short of his 100th birthday.

This book is a poignant read about love of family and work ethics.
