Charlie Reade appears to be a regular high school kid, excelling in both baseball and football, and maintaining decent grades. However, beneath his seemingly ordinary exterior, Charlie carries a heavy burden. His mother was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was just ten years old, a loss that plunged his father into a debilitating cycle of grief and alcoholism. Charlie had to grow up fast, learning to take care of himself and his father.
When Charlie is seventeen, he befriends a dog named Radar and her elderly owner, Howard Bowditch, a reclusive man living in a large, mysterious house atop a hill. The property includes a locked shed, from which strange and inexplicable sounds occasionally emanate, piquing Charlie's curiosity.
As Charlie begins to help Mr. Bowditch with various tasks, he forms a deep bond with Radar. Upon Bowditch's death, Charlie is left with a cassette tape, revealing a story so fantastical that it defies belief. Bowditch had guarded an incredible secret: the shed in his backyard is a portal to another world.
