Citizen Clem by John Bew presents Clement Attlee as the Labour prime minister who led Britain's radical postwar government, overseeing significant events such as the end of the Empire in India, the establishment of the National Health Service, and Britain's membership in NATO. Often described as 'a sheep in sheep's clothing', Attlee has been perceived as an unassuming figure overshadowed by Churchill. However, this revelatory biography demonstrates that Attlee was not only a hero of his era but also a symbol of it, with his life illustrating the profound transformations within Britain throughout the twentieth century.

John Bew examines Attlee's reserved nature to reveal the intellect and principles of Britain's greatestβ€”and perhaps least celebratedβ€”peacetime prime minister. This edition features a new preface by the author addressing the 2017 general election.
