DescriptionBlack and British by David Olusoga is a monumental exploration of the intertwined histories of the black and white communities in the United Kingdom. Delving deep into the past, this richly detailed book reveals centuries of hidden stories, illuminating the significant contributions and enduring presence of African and Caribbean people in British life and history. Through meticulous research and compelling narrative, Olusoga seeks to reframe our understanding of British history by bringing to the forefront the integral role played by black individuals across different eras.
In this essential and timely re-examination of a shared history, Olusoga covers a wide array of periods and events, starting from the Roman Empire’s reach into Britain to modern times. The book includes a thorough analysis of the medieval period, exploring the presence and representation of Africans in that era. It continues with a look at the Tudor era, examining the lives and experiences of 'blackamoors' in Elizabethan England. Olusoga also provides an in-depth account of the transatlantic slave trade, detailing the economic foundations laid by this brutal history and its influence on the industrial boom of the nineteenth century.
One of the standout features of this new edition is the inclusion of recent significant events such as the Windrush scandal and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. These chapters bring the historical narratives into the contemporary context, demonstrating how historical injustices have persisted and evolved to shape present-day societal issues. This updated version is more relevant than ever, putting black British history at the centre of current national debates, confirming that this history is inherently woven into the cultural and economic fabric of the nation.
Drawing on new genealogical research, original records, and expert testimony, Black and British takes a deep dive into various crucial moments in history. It highlights the involvement of black Britons in pivotal events, such as fighting at the Battle of Trafalgar and in the trenches of both World Wars, showcasing their ongoing contributions and resilience. Through an unflinching narrative that confronts taboo subjects and uncovers previously unknown scandals, Olusoga reveals the deep-seated and often unacknowledged linkages between black and white Britons.
The book's achievements have been widely recognised. It won the 2017 PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize and the Longman History Today Trustees' Award. It was also named Waterstones History Book of the Year, longlisted for the Orwell Prize, and shortlisted for the inaugural Jhalak Prize.
Black and British stands as a vivid affirmation that black history is an indispensable part of the collective history of the British Isles. With articulate prose and profound insight, David Olusoga ensures that this integral history is not marginalised but duly recognised as belonging to us all.
