Berani
Malia, Ari and Ginger's three distinct voices are interwoven to tell the story of Ginger Juice, an orangutan kept captive in a cage in this powerful and uplifting novel suitable for readers of The One and Only Ivan.
Berani tells the story of Malia, who has enjoyed a privileged upbringing in Indonesia. Now facing the prospect of leaving the homeland she cherishes due to her mother's wish to return to her own family abroad, Malia is adamant about staying. How can she leave when she is so committed to fighting for the preservation of Indonesia's precious rainforests?
Ari, on the other hand, realises the fortune in his opportunity to attend school and compete on the chess team, though it requires long hours of work at his uncle's restaurant. His heart is burdened with worry for Ginger Juice, his uncle's orangutan. Trapped in a cage that is far too small, she suffers both physically and mentally. With her original rainforest home now turned into a palm oil plantation, Ari is at a loss for where else she might belong.
The decisions made by Malia and Ari will impact not only themselves but also Ginger Juice and others, provided they are brave enough to act.
A compelling tale of standing up for one's beliefs, no matter the cost.
