The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb explores the tumultuous life of Corby Ledbetter. Struggling with new fatherhood, the loss of his job, and a growing secret addiction, Corby's marriage to his beloved Emily is in a tailspin. Tragedy strikes and tears the family apart, resulting in Corby being sentenced to prison.
Inside, Corby faces the harsh realities of prison life, witnessing acts of brutality yet finding solace in unexpected places. He forms vital connections with a tender-hearted cellmate, a troubled teen who looks to Corby as a role model, and a prison librarian who nourishes his potential. These relationships, along with his mother’s unwavering faith, help Corby to rise above his circumstances.
As Corby counts down the weeks, months, and years of his incarceration, he clings to the hope that mercy and reconciliation are within reach. But can those he loves find it in their hearts to forgive his crimes?
‘The ambition of [Lamb’s] undertaking is staggering... Genuinely affecting.’ The Washington Post
