Rules for Rule Breaking is a debut YA rom-com where two Korean American teens are forced into a shared college visit road trip, only to discover the reasons they've been lifelong rivals might actually indicate they are a perfect pair.
Winter Park and Bobby Bae are Korean American high school juniors whose families have been friends since childhood. Despite this, Winter and Bobby are repulsed by each other.
Winter is headed for MIT and is known for keeping others at arm’s length, possessing a responsible nature. Yet, she harbours a secret desire to let loose, influenced by her rebel grandmother who constantly pushes boundaries. Faced with her best friend moving abroad and choosing not to attend college, Winter grapples with the prospect of being left behind.
Bobby, meanwhile, is a type A personality, anxious and averse to risk. Recently dumped, he feels disoriented and untethered.
When their parents insist they go on a Northeast college campus tour together, Winter and Bobby reluctantly find reasons to agree, though the thought of sharing a car for seven hundred miles seems unbearable. What unfolds is a journey of self-discovery, where the only rule is to break all the rules. Initially, their rule-breaking is hilariously calculated, employing lists, reason and logic. However, they soon challenge each other to more impulsive dares.
This includes getting high and exploring Philly for food, battling the ensuing digestive distress, and crashing a party in Cambridge. Ultimately, they realise they are perfect together.
