Shermy and Shake, the Not-So-New Kid is a heartwarming story by Newbery Honoree Kirby Larson that continues with warmth and humour, featuring the adventures of Shermy and his pal Shake.

Shermy is thrilled to find out that the new kid in school is none other than his friend Shake. However, he soon worries that the other kids might like Shake better. Being a second grader turns out to be even cooler than Shermy imagined. He delights in reading new stories, filling out charts about them, helping his teacher get organised, and taking on the role of a good classroom leader.

When Shermy’s teacher asks him to be a school buddy for the new student, he eagerly agrees. To his surprise, the new kid is Shake, his summer friend from out of town. At first, this seems like amazing news—but is it really? Although meticulous Shermy and boisterous Shake are very different, soon the other kids begin to see Shake as a super rare Magic Monster card, while Shermy feels overlooked.

Can Shermy and Shake maintain their friendship now that school is in session? This nuanced story explores the themes of friendship and individuality, and shines with authentic humour and understanding, brought to life by illustrator Shinji Fujioka.
