O le aganu’u o le ‘Ava a Samoa
- Bilingual Samoan and English book for kids of primary school age - The all-important ‘ava ceremony presented with lovely illustrations -
Distinguished educator and translator Tauanu'u Perenise Tapu Sitagata joins with artist Ani Huia Ligaliga to present the ‘ava ceremony, one of the key customs to welcome visitors to a village in Samoa.
Drawing on his deep knowledge of fa'asamoa (the Samoan Way), Tauanu'u explains the role of ‘ava (kava, as it is more widely known) in ceremonies and welcomes for visitors.
Follow the sequence of making and serving ‘ava, including who does what, and the objects used. The book concludes with myths about the ‘ava plant’s origins.
