Paul Gauguin Masterpieces of Art
Gauguin began his artistic life as an Impressionist in Paris, but yearning for a wider world view he experimented with decorative art and bright colours to create a form of Symbolism. He painted briefly with Van Gogh but was strongly drawn by the βothernessβ of the South Pacific which has secured him a unique place in the history of art.
Paul Gauguin Masterpieces of Art by Rosalind Ormiston explores Gauguin's journey from his beginnings as an Impressionist in Paris to his development of a distinctive style that some have described as Symbolism. Yearning for a broader world view, Gauguin experimented with decorative art and bright colours.
He briefly painted with Van Gogh but was strongly drawn to the "otherness" of the South Pacific. Gauguin frequently travelled to this region and eventually settled there, far from his origins and early influences, to create a unique and intensely personal collection of work.
This beautiful new book revels in the scenes of Tahiti, the sunlit bodies, and the shapes and styles of the South Pacific, all of which have secured him a unique place in the history of art.
