The Pirates Next Door by Jonny Duddle introduces us to the Jolley-Rogers, a pirate family that moves to Dull-on-Sea, a quiet seaside town. As they stop to fix up their ship, this unusual family sets the whole neighbourhood abuzz with rumours.

Despite the gossiping grown-ups, Matilda from next door defies expectations and becomes friends with the youngest pirate son. Upon their departure, the townspeople realise they were wrong to judge the Jolley-Rogers harshly. The pirate clan has left behind a delightful surprise: treasure buried in everyone's gardens, a twist beautifully illustrated in a stunning double-gatefold.

Though initially saddened by their departure, Matilda finds her own special treasure: an incredibly exciting new pen friend.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Captain Duddle is praised as the king of pirate picture books, delivering cheerful chaos and humour in this tale of the Jolley Rogers upending the sleepy town of Dull-on-Sea. Readers will enjoy plentiful laughs and amusing visual details including a wooden-legged dog. The story has been described as a definite triumph, with nods to forthcoming Jolley Rogers fiction for younger readers.
