The Analects by Confucius is a cornerstone of Eastern philosophy and cultural heritage, woven from the thoughts and teachings of the 'great sage' Confucius. Structured as a collection of insightful sayings and ideas, these texts were meticulously compiled by his disciples over two millennia ago. Without delving into narrative spoilers, it can be said that the sayings encapsulate Confucian ideals on ethics, politics, and personal conduct, resonating with wisdom and moral guidance that transcends time and geography.

Born of an age marked by turmoil in ancient China, The Analects serves as both a window into the historical context of its inception and a beacon for modern readers seeking principles of harmony, justice, and virtuous living. The teachings revolve around the concept of 'ren' (humaneness or benevolence) and the importance of leading a life characterised by integrity, propriety, and filial piety. Confucius envisions an ideal society founded on transparent and honourable relationships among individuals, thereby fostering a cohesive and peaceful community.

This edition, part of the Macmillan Collector's Library, is both complete and unabridged, presented in a stunning, cloth-bound, pocket-sized format with luxurious gold foiled edges and a ribbon marker, making it a precious addition to any collection or a thoughtful gift for book lovers. David Hinton's translation is highly regarded for its poetic fluency and accessibility, making the ancient wisdom of Confucius inviting and immensely readable for contemporary audiences.

Confucius’s profound philosophical legacy, encapsulated within The Analects, underscores the inviolable values of humanity and societal harmony, which remain startlingly relevant. His advocacy for living by a moral code emphasising education, rituals, respect, and integrity is seen as a roadmap to achieving peace and happiness across human societies. Readers will find that these timeless aphorisms continue to impart invaluable lessons on personal growth and ethical leadership.

About the Author

Confucius (551-479 BCE) was born into a noble family in the Chinese state of Lu. His father died when he was very young and the family fell into poverty. Confucius resigned from a political career and then travelled for many years, searching for a province willing to adopt his ideas. Unsuccessful, he returned to Lu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. He is considered one of the most influential figures in the world. David Hinton has translated many volumes of classical Chinese poetry and is the first translator in nearly two centuries to translate all five of the seminal classics in Chinese philosophy. This work has earned him many national awards in the United States, including a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His book of essays, Hunger Mountain: A Field Guide to Mind and Landscape was on the Guardian's Best-Books-of-the-Year list.
