The Planets by Andrew Cohen and Professor Brian Cox takes readers on an extraordinary journey across our Solar System. This companion book to the critically acclaimed BBC series delves deep into each planet, unravelling the mysteries and marvels that lie within our cosmic neighbourhood. From the searing heat of Mercury to the icy boundaries of Pluto, every page offers a captivating exploration backed by the latest scientific discoveries.

The narrative begins with Mercury, a scorched world constantly bombarded by the Sun's rays. It then moves to Venus, a once-promising twin to Earth now shrouded in a dense, toxic atmosphere. Mars, the red planet, comes up next with its haunting, barren landscapes, a reminder of what could have been. The giant Jupiter, with its immense size and swirling storms, is described in all its turbulent grandeur. Saturn follows, a jewel adorned with spectacular rings, captivating and awe-inspiring. The journey proceeds to Uranus, the curious sideways planet, and Neptune, the distant, wind-whipped world. Finally, the book touches on Pluto, the once-ninth planet, now demoted to a dwarf planet yet still intriguing with its frozen surface.

Andrew Cohen and Professor Brian Cox are adept at making complex astronomical concepts accessible to readers, providing rich visuals and detailed explanations that inspire awe and wonder. Each chapter of The Planets not only describes the physical characteristics of these celestial bodies but also delves into their history and the scientific endeavours that have expanded our understanding of them. The book is interspersed with stunning imagery, complementing the in-depth text and bringing the planets closer to home for readers.

This masterpiece is more than a mere account of the planets; it is a profound exploration of our place in the cosmos. As Cohen and Cox highlight the most recent advancements and discoveries, they present a comprehensive view that underscores how dynamic and interconnected our Solar System truly is.

Visually striking and intellectually enriching, The Planets is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the wonders of space, providing both seasoned enthusiasts and curious newcomers with an unparalleled experience of our Solar System.
