Three Bengal Kittens
Three Bengal Kittens, by Philipp Schott, follows Dr. Peter Bannerman as he uses his sniffer dog, Pippin, to uncover suspects, treat animals, track a kitten kidnapper, and solve a locked-room mystery.
In this fourth book in the series, Dr. Peter Bannerman’s brother, Sam, takes in three Bengal kittens after the previous owner—his neighbour in a Winnipeg north end apartment building—is found dead. The death was initially believed to be the result of accidental autoerotic asphyxiation, but after further investigation, Sam is arrested and charged with his neighbour’s murder.
Sam suffers from several mental health conditions, but Peter refuses to believe that he is capable of killing someone. Determined to prove his brother's innocence, Peter sets out on a mission to clear Sam’s name. Sam, however, is more concerned about one of the kittens who has gone missing. With the help of his talented sniffer dog, Pippin, Peter endeavours to find the missing kitten as well as evidence that someone else may have been responsible for the neighbour's murder.
Peter interviews the other residents in Sam’s building, each presenting as a plausible alternative suspect. Meanwhile, Sam, remaining in custody, starts raving about ghosts being the true murderers and insists that Peter investigate this angle. Despite his disbelief in ghosts, Peter experiences a terrifying ordeal while spending the night in Sam’s apartment, which further complicates the situation.
The plot quickly intensifies, placing Peter and Pippin in danger and ultimately unravelling a tale of revenge served cold from decades ago and originating from continents away.
