Sad Tiger by Neige Sinno is a powerful literary work that has won multiple prizes and has become an international phenomenon, taking France by storm.

"Reading Sad Tiger is like descending into an abyss with your eyes open. It forces you to see, to really see, what it means to be a child abused by an adult, for years. Everyone should read it." -Annie Ernaux

The narrative of Sad Tiger is rooted in a series of devastating events. Neige Sinno was seven years old when her stepfather began sexually abusing her. At the age of 19, she chose to break the silence that often surrounds sexual violence in all cultures. This courageous act led to a public trial, resulting in her stepfather's imprisonment, and Sinno started a new life in Mexico.

Through a fragmented narrative, Sinno delves into the complexities of memoryβ€”her own, her mother's, and her abusive stepfather'sβ€”as well as the nature of abuse in its horror and banality. Her account is skillfully interwoven with literary readings from authors such as Vladimir Nabokov, Virginia Woolf, Toni Morrison, Christine Angot, and Virginie Despentes.

Sad Tigerβ€”inspired by William Blake's poem "The Tyger"β€”is a literary exploration of how to articulate the unspeakable. Amid the darkness, it poses a crucial question: how can others be protected from the author's own experiences? The answer is resoundingly clearβ€”by speaking up and asking questions. This is a striking, shocking, and necessary masterpiece.
