The Laughter of Carthage
Maxim Arturovitch Pyatnitski, that charming but despicable mythomaniac who first appeared in Byzantium Endures (PM Press, 2012, available from Turnaround), is back. Having fled Bolshevik Russia in late 1919, Pyat's progress is a series of leaps from crisis to crisis, as he begins affairs with a Baroness and a Greek prostitute while undertaking schemes to build flying machines in Europe and the United States.
His devotion to flamboyantly racist, particularly anti-Semitic doctrinesβlike his devotion to cocaineβremains unabated. Pyat remains one of literature's great anti-heroes.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
The Laughter of Carthage by Michael Moorcock is celebrated for its rich and ambitious storytelling, reminiscent of nineteenth-century narratives. Critics praise it for its imaginative scope and Moorcock's ability to transport readers into different worlds. The book is noted for its complex narrative and a protagonist whose reliability is always in question, with elements of intrigue spanning various significant historical settings. Its portrayal as both an epic work and a brilliant fusion of different narrative styles has garnered high acclaim.
