Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen
Introduction to the life and teachings of the extraordinary abbess, composer, theologian, preacher, healer and one of the greatest artists and intellectuals of western tradition.
Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen by Matthew Fox explores the incredible life of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), an extraordinary woman who lived in the Rhineland valley during the twelfth century. Beyond her leadership as the abbess of a large and influential Benedictine abbey, Hildegard was known for her roles as a prominent preacher, healer, scientist, and artist.
Her contributions extended to music and theology, as she composed, wrote nine books on theology, medicine, science, and physiology, penned 70 poems, and created an opera. Remarkably, at the age of 42, she began to experience visions. These visions were captured as 36 illuminations, 24 of which are documented in this book, accompanied by her insightful commentaries.
