The Voice Upstairs
A girl who can see spirits must work together with a Lord's son in order to solve the mysterious deaths at the local manor home in this eerie historical mystery perfect for fans of The Bone Witch and Downton Abbey.
In 1920s England, a working-class girl who can see spirits works with a lord’s son to solve mysterious deaths at the local manor home in this “intensely atmospheric and eerie…compelling, secret-filled gothic tale” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) perfect for fans of The Haunting of Bly Manor and Downton Abbey.
The Voice Upstairs introduces us to Wilhelmina Price, a young woman with a dubious reputation in the village of Thrush’s Green. Since her mother’s untimely death, Wil has had the unsettling ability to see a person’s spirit leaving their body days or hours before they die. Despite her foresight, she has never been able to prevent these deaths, rendering her an outsider to most. Her only close ally is her lifelong friend, Edison, the youngest son of Lord Summerfield.
When a maid at the Summerfield estate dies in a manner similar to Wil's mother, she decides to take on a housemaid’s position to investigate whether these women might have been murdered. This decision propels her into a world of intrigue and danger.
Ed Summerfield, cherishing his friendship with Wil above all else, is trying desperately to conceal his growing romantic feelings for her. Complicating matters further is Ed's belief that he may be haunted by the ghost of his older brother, Peter. He fears for his sanity since Wil, with her supernatural insight, cannot see the same spectral presence he experiences.
As Wil and Ed delve deeper into the Summerfield’s trove of secrets, they must confront daunting truths and perilous adversaries, both alive and spectral. The path to uncovering the truth could prove deadly for them both.
