Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), a pioneering figure of the Romantic movement in Germany, is hailed as perhaps Europe’s first truly modern artist. His evocative and melancholic landscapes, often featuring solitary wanderers, mark a shift towards a profoundly subjective approach to art. Joseph Leo Koerner’s Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape offers a compelling and original analysis of Friedrich’s work, exploring how it emerges from and redefines a subjectivist aesthetic.

Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape, Second Edition by Joseph Leo Koerner explores the work of Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), the greatest painter of the Romantic movement in Germany. Friedrich was perhaps Europe's first truly modern artist.

His melancholy landscapes, often populated by lonely wanderers, represent experiments towards a radically subjective art. This compelling and highly original book, a winner of the 1992 Mitchell Prize for the History of Art, is now available in a compact pocket format.

Joseph Leo Koerner analyses Friedrich's art as it emerges out of, and partly reorientates, a subjectivist aesthetic.
