Shakespearean Representation

Mimesis and Modernity in Elizabethan Tragedy
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Shakespearean Representation by Howard M. Felperin investigates the paradox of Shakespeare as both a contemporary figure and a creator of Elizabethan works. Felperin explores the nature of literary modernity through the lens of mimesis, analysing how Shakespeare’s major tragedies balance fidelity to dramatic prototypes with departures that invite both conservative and modernist interpretations. This study reveals Shakespeare's enduring relevance by examining his complex relationship with past artistic forms.

We are often told that Shakespeare is our contemporary, yet we insist just as often on the Elizabethan quality of his work as it reflects a culture remote from our own. Beginning with this paradox, Howard Felperin explores the question of modernity in literature.

He directs his attention toward several older poets and examines Shakespeare in particular to show how literary modernity depends, not on chronological considerations, but on the process of mimesis, or imitation, that art has traditionally claimed for itself.

In analysing Shakespeare's major tragedies, Professor Felperin notes that each carries within it a model of its dramatic prototypes, and therefore requires a conservative response from its interpreters. In the interest of being truer to life than its model, however, each play departs from that model and so requires a Romantic or modernist response as well. The author contends that Shakespeare's meaning arises from this ambivalent relation to the forms of the past.

Shakespearean Representation was originally published in 1978. • German Nationalism and Religious Conflict
The German Empire of 1871, although unified politically, remained deeply divided along religious lines. In German Nationalism and Religious Conflict, Helmut Walser Smith offers the first social, cultural, and political history of this division. He argues that Protestants and Catholics lived in different worlds, separated by an "invisible boundary" of culture, defined as a community of meaning. As these worlds...

  • The Origin of the Idea of Crusade
Though conditioned by the specific circumstances of eleventh-century Europe, the launching of the crusades presupposed a long historical evolution of the idea of Christian knighthood and holy war. Carl Erdmann developed this argument first in 1935 in a book that is still recognised as basic to an understanding of how the crusades came about. This first edition in English includes...

  • John Stuart Mill and Representative Government
Although Mill regarded Considerations on Representative Government as a mature statement of his theory of democracy, critics have tended to treat it less seriously than most of his other major works. Dennis Thompson argues that this neglect has led to inadequate interpretations of Mill's thought on democracy. Drawing where appropriate on other writings by Mill, the author restores a balanced...
