The Haunting of Hill House
Four seekers have arrived at the rambling old pile known as Hill House: Dr Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of psychic phenomena; Theodora, his lovely assistant; Luke, the future inheritor of the estate; and Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman with a dark past.
The best-known of Shirley Jackson's novels, and the inspiration for writers such as Neil Gaiman and Stephen King, The Haunting of Hill House is a chilling story of the power of fear.

DescriptionThe Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is an unparalleled classic in the genre of horror literature, weaving an atmosphere of dread and suspense that continues to captivate readers. The story follows four distinct characters brought together by a shared curiosity about the supernatural phenomena reported at the infamous Hill House.
Dr. Montague, a determined and scholarly investigator of the occult, sets out to find incontrovertible evidence of psychic events. His assistant Theodora is a vibrant and free-spirited young woman whose presence contrasts sharply with that of Eleanor, a shy and emotionally scarred recluse struggling with a tumultuous past. Joining them is Luke, the brash and charming heir who is more interested in inheriting than investigating. What begins as a somewhat scientific quest quickly devolves into an unsettling ordeal as Hill House reveals its malevolent intentions.
The four seekers soon find themselves at the mercy of the house's inexplicable and terrifying phenomena. Each chilling and mystifying event intensifies the group's fears and strains their bonds. Immobilised by the dread conjured by the house, they realise it is not merely haunted but alive with dark psychic forces.
As the tension escalates, the inhabitants of Hill House are thrust into psychological torment, grappling with hallucinations, eerie manifestations, and the ominous sense that they are being watched. The true horror lies in the house’s ability to exploit their deepest fears and insecurities, ultimately preying on one of them who is most susceptible to its evil influences.
Written with Jackson's trademark masterful prose, The Haunting of Hill House is a chilling exploration of the nature of fear and insanity, and it leaves an indelible mark on the reader’s psyche. Stephen King himself acknowledges it as "as nearly perfect a haunted-house tale as I have ever read." This classic is essential reading for anyone enthralled by ghost stories and the psychological intricacies of the gothic horror tradition.

About the Author
Shirley Jackson was born in California in 1916. When her short story, 'The Lottery', was first published in the New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird's Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, widely seen as her masterpiece. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died in 1965.
