OVER 4 MILLION COPIES SOLD WORLDWIDE Shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award and the Guardian First Book Award; longlisted for the Man Booker Prize ‘Unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years ... Funny, moving, scary, otherworldly, practical and magical' NEIL GAIMAN

In a world where magic is thought to be long vanished, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell reintroduces this ancient craft with breathtaking flair. The year is 1806, and England's last great magician, Mr Norrell, emerges from the shadows, stunning the nation with his miraculous feats. As the country teeters on the edge of an existential war with Napoleon's France, Mr Norrell's abilities shift the tide, raising the dead and conjuring fleets of ghostly ships, his acts as both spectacle and weapon. Yet, his profound caution and pedantic nature draw as much criticism as admiration.

Contrasting with the insular Mr Norrell is Jonathan Strange, a young, gallant, and impetuous magician with an innate talent that promises to exceed even Norrell’s. They form an uneasy partnership, with Strange apprenticing under Norrell. However, their alliance soon transforms into a fierce rivalry, fuelled by their diverging philosophies on magic and its practice. Norrell, wary and secretive, deems magic a scholarly pursuit for the select few, while Strange's bold nature leads him to explore the untamed, darker aspects of their shared gift.

The novel weaves its narrative through a richly detailed tapestry of Regency-era England, complete with its political intrigues, historical intricacies, and the ever-present threat of war. The personal conflicts and ambitions of Norrell and Strange soon expand into a broader conflict that engulfs not just the two magicians but the very fabric of English society. Their forays into dark and forbidden realms set the stage for unforeseen consequences, threatening to unleash powers far beyond their control and comprehension.

Susanna Clarke's debut novel is an extraordinary blend of historical fiction and magical realism, structured with intricate footnotes and digressions that deepen the reader's immersion into this alternative historical narrative. The prose is both eloquent and witty, capturing the period's essence while maintaining a modern sensibility. Throughout, Clarke offers a masterful exploration of friendship, power, and the often perilous intersection between ambition and obsession.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell stands as a timeless classic of modern literature, praised for its originality, wit, and the sheer depth of its imaginative scope. Its sweeping narrative and richly developed characters make it a compelling read, whether you are a lover of fantasy, history, or literary fiction. Dive into a world where the mystical intertwines seamlessly with the everyday, and discover a story that is as enchanting as it is profound.
