The Mistral is Felix Mosse’s debut novel, and he really knocked it out of the park. The worldbuilding is rich and well thought out without being bogged down by exposition, and while the story reaches a satisfying conclusion, it clearly feels like the opening act of something bigger. Despite being split between multiple locations, the pacing balances these viewpoints well, allowing each storyline space to unfold without the frustration of cutting away just as things get interesting. The magic system is diverse, utilising aether from the divine winds, manifesting in some individuals as distinct, named abilities but with fewer being born each year. It’s really interesting to see the city going through a sort of Industrial Revolution as they attempt to harness this aether for technology, and how power shifts in the interplay between this and the dying magic. Overall, The Mistral is an immersive, highly readable novel that’s easy to get lost in. There’s a welcome sense of familiarity here, without crossing the line into feeling derivative, and I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing where this world goes.
