This book is an introduction to the star group Matariki. Known in other cultures by names including the Pleiades and the Seven Sisters, Matariki featured strongly in pre-European New Zealand. It marked the beginning of the Maori calendar, and its rising before the sun in late May or early June was greeted with great festivals.

Matariki The Maori New Year by Libby Hakaraia is a captivating exploration of the Matariki star cluster—known in other cultures as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. Rooted deeply in Maori tradition, Matariki's rising before the sun in late May or early June signalled the commencement of the Maori calendar, celebrated with great festivals. This celestial event was not just a symbol of time but also served as a crucial guide for planting and harvesting seasons. Tohunga, or Maori experts, studied Matariki's position and visibility to predict whether the forthcoming food-gathering season would be bountiful or scarce.

Hakaraia enriches the narrative through insightful interviews with renowned astronomers Richard Hall and Vicki Hyde. The book also delves into the expertise of well-known navigator Hekenukumai Busby, and Hapimana Rikihana, who continues to practice the ancient Maori art of mahi whai, or string patterns. These personal accounts lend authenticity and depth, connecting the reader to the historical and cultural significance of Matariki.

Today, the tradition of celebrating Matariki is experiencing a resurgence as more individuals and communities embrace Maori New Year festivities. For those eager to participate in this growing cultural movement, Hakaraia offers practical suggestions on how to celebrate, along with detailed instructions for locating Matariki in the night sky. The book serves both as an educational resource and a guide for observing and honouring this significant Maori tradition.

With its rich historical context and contemporary relevance, Matariki The Maori New Year provides a thorough understanding of a tradition that has been passed down through generations and continues to thrive in modern New Zealand. It's an essential read for anyone interested in Maori culture, astronomy, and the timeless bond between humankind and the celestial realm.
