Rooms: Portraits of Remarkable New Zealand Interiors, by the lauded photographer Jane Ussher, sold out quickly when it was published in 2022. Since then, she has been photographing homes throughout New Zealand for Rooms Volume Two.
As with its glorious predecessor, its 300 images reveal and celebrate the way art, furniture, textiles and found objects can be deployed to reflect life here in Aotearoa. Importantly, all the houses gathered in this book have a sort of secret sauce: what their owners have is not as important as how they have placed it in a space.
Ussher’s images of rooms from across New Zealand are introduced by a superb essay by design expert Douglas Lloyd Jenkins. Detailed texts at the back explain artwork, furniture and objects visible in the images. It is destined to feature on coffee tables for many years to come.

About the Author
Jane Ussher MNZM is one of New Zealand’s foremost documentary and portrait photographers whose work has been widely published and has won numerous awards. Her photographs have appeared in the high-profile, award-winning books Still Life: Inside the Antarctic Huts of Scott and Shackleton (Murdoch Books, 2010); Coast: A New Zealand Journey (Godwit, 2013); Worship: A History of New Zealand Church Design (Godwit, 2015); Islands: A New Zealand Journey (Godwit, 2016); The New Zealand Horse: A 200 Year History (Massey University Press, 2018); Endless Sea: Stories Told Through the Taonga of the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui te Ananui a Tangaroa (Massey University Press, 2020); Nature — Stilled (Te Papa Press, 2020); Homesteads: The Story of New Zealand’s Grand Country Homes (Point Publishing, 2020); Rooms: Portraits of Remarkable New Zealand Interiors (Massey University Press, 2022); Woolsheds: The Historic Shearing Sheds of Aotearoa New Zealand (Massey University Press, 2024); Olveston: A Portrait of a Home (Massey University Press, 2025); and Stringer: The Art of Terry Stringer (Massey University Press, 2026).
Douglas Lloyd Jenkins MNZM is an award-winning writer and critic. Born in Auckland in 1963, he is a well-known writer and commentator covering all aspects of architecture, design and the arts, having previously had columns in the New Zealand Herald, Home New Zealand and the New Zealand Listener. His book At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design (Godwit, 2004) won the Montana Medal for Non-fiction in 2005, and the co-authored The Dress Circle: New Zealand Fashion Design Since 1940 (Godwit, 2010) was shortlisted for the same prize. Beach Life: A Celebration of Kiwi Beach Culture (Godwit, 2016) won the 2019 PANZ Book Design award for Best Illustrated Book. In 2008 he was awarded Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for contribution to architecture and design, and in 2009 the New Zealand Institute of Architects awarded him its President’s Award for contribution to architecture. He has also been a television presenter, academic and museum director. Since 2020 he has focused his energies on restoring an Arts and Crafts-era house and garden and writing novels. His most recent publication was the novel Shelter (Bateman, 2022).
