Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

A gripping new translation of Simenon's cinematic tale of greed, guilt and the cruel workings of fate.

The Venice Train tells the story of Justin Calmar, who experiences some painful, nerve-racking weeks. At the office or at home, in the middle of a meal, he suddenly finds his forehead bathed in sweat and a tightness in his chest. At those times, feeling everyone's eyes on him becomes unbearable.

When a particularly inquisitive stranger strikes up a conversation with Calmar on the train home from a family holiday, his sun-drenched memories are overshadowed by an event that will change his life forever. As he travels alone through northern Italy and Switzerland, his carefully constructed life as an upright citizen begins to unravel, revealing secret motivations and hidden impulses that threaten to overwhelm him.

Originally published in 1965, shortly after Simenon moved into his spacious new home in Palinges, Switzerland, this chilling novel is a powerful exploration of the fragility of the human psyche.

About the Author

Georges Simenon (Author) Georges Simenon was born in Li ge, Belgium in 1903. An intrepid traveller with a profound interest in people, Simenon strove on and off the page to understand, rather than to judge, the human condition in all its shades. His novels include the Inspector Maigret series and a richly varied body of wider work united by its evocative power, its economy of means, and its penetrating psychological insight. He is among the most widely read writers in the global canon. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life. Ros Schwartz (Translator) Ros Schwartz is an award-winning translator from French. Acclaimed for her new version of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince, published in 2010, she has over 100 fiction and non-fiction titles to her name. The French government made Ros a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2009, and in 2017 she was awarded the Institute of Translation and Interpreting's John Sykes Memorial Prize for Excellence.
