Women Rock!

Women Rock! celebrates the vital roles women have played in the history of rock music. Without Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a gospel-singing electric guitarist, rock might never have been born. Janis Joplin and Grace Slick were at the forefront of the burgeoning hippie subculture that defined a decade. Aretha Franklin epitomised the sound of the civil rights movement, while Riot Grrrl propelled both feminism and punk into the spotlight.

Women Rock! honours the remarkable contributions of 46 female artists who have significantly influenced rock music. These women serve as inspirational figures, encouraging generations of girls to pursue their dreams — musical and beyond.

Author: Philip Auslander is a professor of performance studies and popular musicology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. He specialises in music, performance, and visual art, and has authored numerous articles and seven books, including Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music, In Concert: Performing Musical Persona, and three editions of Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture. Dr. Blues, a short film written, produced, and acted in by Auslander, premiered at the Peachtree Village International Film Festival in Atlanta in 2019.
