What Is Cinema? Volume II continues the exploration of film theory and criticism by André Bazin, a seminal figure in French cinema and film studies. This volume features thought-provoking essays that blend intellectual rigour with accessibility, guided by Bazin's humanistic perspective. With forewords from François Truffaut and Dudley Andrew, the collection re-examines Bazin's enduring influence on understanding cinema's art and history.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

These two volumes have been classics of film studies for as long as they've been available and are considered the gold standard in the field of film criticism. Although Bazin made no films, his name has been one of the most important in French cinema since World War II.

He became coeditor of the influential Cahiers du Cinema, which under his leadership became one of the world's most distinguished publications. His protégés included Jean Renoir, who contributed a short foreword to Volume I, and Francois Truffaut, who provides the same for Volume II.

This new edition includes graceful forewords to each volume by Bazin scholar and biographer Dudley Andrew, who reconsiders Bazin and his place in contemporary film study. The essays themselves are erudite but always accessible, intellectual, and stimulating. As Renoir puts it, the essays of Bazin "will survive even if the cinema does not."

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Jonathan Rosenbaum, film critic for the Chicago Reader, praised Bazin as one of the most scrupulous humanists and polemicists, comparing him favourably to George Orwell. Rosenbaum noted that Bazin's essays map the complex terrain of modern cinema and remain essential to its study despite Bazin's passing before contemporary cinema's rise.
