Walmajarri Country is home to the Walmajarri people and located south of Fitzroy Crossing and the Christmas Creek Valley in the Great Sandy Desert of WA. This vast and culturally rich landscape stretches from the Canning Stock Route up towards Derby and Halls Creek.

About the Author
Pat Lowe was born and grew up in England but dreamed of migrating to Australia, which she did in 1972. She worked as a teacher in Africa and as a prison psychologist in Australia, but writing has always been her passion. She met Jimmy Pike in 1979 and a few years later set up camp with him in the desert. What followed was a collaboration with Jimmy on a number of books. She now spends her time in Broome.
The late Jimmy Pike (Kurnti) was a Walmajarri man. He was born in the Great Sandy Desert in about 1940, a member of the last generation that grew up in a semi-nomadic family. He became a skilled hunter. He moved to Cherrabun Station with other fringe-dwellers when he was still a boy, and later became a stockman. After many years working on cattle stations, and several more in prison, he took up painting and within a few years established an international reputation as an artist.
