An illustrated guide to the feelings of others, helping children to recognise and understand empathy.
An illustrated guide to the feelings of others, helping children to recognise and understand empathy.
The follow-up to What Are You Feeling, a 2023 Eureka Honor Award Winner.
What Are They Feeling? is a fun, engaging introduction to reading other people’s feelings—an essential social-emotional skill for every child.
Join Detective Feelings on a playful investigation into the clues that reveal how someone else might be feeling. Children learn to look closely at facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, and what’s happening in a situation. Are they smiling, frowning, nervous, excited, or confused? Did someone tell a funny joke—or say something unkind?
As young readers follow along, they discover:
- What empathy is and why it matters
- How to understand someone’s emotions even if you’ve never experienced the same thing
- How people can feel differently in the very same moment
- Why showing care helps us build strong friendships and feel more confident in social situations
With relatable examples—like moving to a new country, starting a new school, or feeling left out—children learn that everyone has their own inner world, and that noticing others’ feelings helps us connect.
Filled with vibrant, witty illustrations by award-winning artist Daniel Gray-Barnett, this book offers a joyful, accessible way to help children navigate emotions, improve communication, and grow their emotional intelligence.
Perfect for parents, teachers, or caregivers who want to support children ages 4–8 in developing empathy, social skills, and emotional awareness.

About the Author
The School of Life is devoted to developing emotional intelligence. It addresses issues such as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one's past, how to achieve calm, and how better to understand and - where necessary - change the world. These ideas are delivered through a range of channels: from videos, books, and products - to classes, events, and one-to-one therapy sessions. The School of Life Press brings together the thinking and ideas of the School of Life creative team under the direction of series editor, Alain de Botton. Their books share a coherent, curated message that speaks with one voice: calm, reassuring, and sane.
Daniel Gray-Barnett is an award-winning illustrator and author based in the Huon Valley, lutruwita/Tasmania. A self-taught artist, he once studied medical science before realising storytelling had a far lower mortality rate. His books have been recognised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, the Society of Illustrators, and the International Youth Library and he has collaborated with Children’s Laureates Sally Rippin (Australia) and Joseph Coelho (UK).
Daniel lives with his husband, kids, dogs, and chickens – and hopes to tell a few more stories before turning into a grumpy old man.
