In Undoing Privilege, Professor Bob Pease delves into the less examined counterpart of oppressionβ€”privilege. The book discusses various forms of privilege including Western dominance, class elitism, white and patriarchal privilege, as well as heterosexual and able-bodied privilege. Pease highlights the complex nature of social identities, where individuals may experience oppression in some areas while simultaneously benefiting from privilege in others. He also explores how those in dominant groups can critically engage with their privilege and become allies in the pursuit of social justice.

For every group that is oppressed, another group is privileged. In this book, the author argues that privilege, as the other side of oppression, has received insufficient attention in both critical theories and in the practices of social change.

For every group that is oppressed, one or more other groups are privileged in relation to it. This book argues that privilege, as the other side of oppression, has been given insufficient attention in both critical theories and in the practices of social change and as a result, dominant groups have been allowed to reinforce their dominance.

For every group that is oppressed, another group is privileged. In Undoing Privilege, Bob Pease argues that privilege, as the other side of oppression, has received insufficient attention in both critical theories and in the practices of social change. As a result, dominant groups have been allowed to reinforce their dominance.

Undoing Privilege explores the main sites of privilege, from Western dominance, class elitism, and white and patriarchal privilege to the less-examined sites of heterosexual and able-bodied privilege. Pease points out that while the vast majority of people may be oppressed on one level, many are also privileged on another. He also demonstrates how members of privileged groups can engage critically with their own dominant position, and explores the potential and limitations of them becoming allies against oppression and their own unearned privilege.

This is an essential book for all who are concerned about developing theories and practices for a socially just world.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Ravindra R.P. from India praises the book as a scholarly and well-written exploration that introduces a new intersectional theory of privilege. The author’s sincerity and humility are evident, challenging simplistic either/or views of oppression and privilege. Jeff Hearn, Professor of Gender Studies, calls it a very important book that thoroughly confronts multiple dimensions of privilege and outlines ways to undo them through theory, practice, and activism.
