True Grit by Charles Portis is a timeless novel that captures the essence of courage and justice in the Old West. Set against the harsh backdrop of the American frontier, the story weaves a compelling narrative of resilience, revenge, and unexpected alliances.

When Frank Ross is brutally killed by one of his own workers, Tom Chaney, for the paltry sum of USD150 cash, a horse, and two Californian gold pieces, the law shows little interest in bringing the murderer to justice. It falls to Frank's unusually mature and determined fourteen-year-old daughter, Mattie Ross, to seek retribution. Armed with an unwavering sense of duty and remarkable courage for her age, Mattie embarks on a perilous journey to claim her father's body and exact vengeance on Chaney.

Upon her arrival, Mattie realises that the local authorities are indifferent to her plight. Undeterred, she learns of Reuben "Rooster" Cogburn, a U.S. Marshal known for his toughness and honour, despite his rough exterior and unconventional methods. With great resolve, Mattie persuades Rooster to join her in venturing into the treacherous Indian Territory in pursuit of Chaney.

Rooster, who embodies the term 'true grit', is initially reluctant but agrees to the mission, intrigued by Mattie's tenacity. Together, they trek through a landscape fraught with danger, encountering a cast of vivid characters, including the brash Texas Ranger, LaBoeuf, who has his reasons to join the hunt for Chaney.

As their journey unfolds, the novel delves deep into themes of justice and moral fortitude, showcasing Mattie's unrelenting spirit and the unlikely bond that forms between her and Rooster. Portis masterfully crafts a tale that is both a gripping adventure and a heart-warming story of perseverance.

True Grit is celebrated for its authentic dialogue, rich characterisation, and its exploration of honour amidst the wild and often lawless backdrop of the West. This novel is a poignant reminder of the strength of human resolve and the enduring quest for justice.
