Travellers in the Third Reich by Julia Boyd offers a gripping and nuanced exploration of Germany between 1919 and 1945, unravelling the complexities and dynamics of the Nazi rise to power through the eyes of foreigners who lived, worked, or travelled in the country. This meticulously researched narrative is based on a rich tapestry of first-hand accounts, painting a vivid and multi-dimensional portrait of Germany during this tumultuous era. The book delves deep into the experiences of a diverse group of individuals including students, politicians, musicians, diplomats, tourists, and even celebrities like Charles Lindbergh and Samuel Beckett, all of whom provide unique perspectives on the unfolding historical events.

As the world grappled with the aftermath of World War I and the ensuing economic turmoil, these travellers witnessed the gradual yet relentless ascent of National Socialism. Boyd sheds light on the confusions, doubts, and occasional moments of hope that characterised this period. Through their stories, we get to see a Germany that struggled under the weight of propaganda, with the spectre of the Holocaust looming. The travellers’ narratives capture both trivial and tragic aspects of life under Nazi rule, painting a stark yet human picture that invites readers to feel, hear, and almost breathe the atmosphere of the time.

Praised for its compelling narrative by the Daily Telegraph and described as fascinating by The Spectator, Travellers in the Third Reich stands out not only for its detailed historical analysis but also for its emotional resonance. Boyd effectively uses these accounts to illustrate the paradoxes inherent in Nazi Germany and to illuminate the complex human experiences that often get overshadowed by the broader strokes of history. From disturbing and absurd to profoundly moving, these accidental eyewitnesses to history offer fresh insights into the rise and fall of the Third Reich, enriching our understanding of both the era and the people who lived through it.
