Time Shifts, Patterns Stay the Same

Time Shifts, Patterns Stay the Same by Marlies Pekarek features selected texts from her art diaries, which she began during her studies in Australia and has continued to this day. This book takes inspiration from the Australian Woman's Diaries, an annual calendar with diary sections for personal notes, stories about women in Australia, and nostalgic illustrations and texts from historical guidebooks for women. Pekarek has reinterpreted this model, developing it within her own context.

Her work includes current global events in collages made from press photos and other findings, alongside general considerations such as reflections on symbols of power, different religions, and the position of women. From within the printed frame of the calendar, she creates expressive, playful, and light-hearted illustrations, forming associative connections. Although these diaries initially emerged as an artistic by-product of her current work cycles, as standalone works, they aptly illustrate key issues in Pekarek's creative development.
