"An urgent wakeup call on the dangers of the new tribalism in global politics"--
The Tribalization of Europe explores the global megatrend of tribalization in today’s world. The election of Donald Trump, the Brexit vote, populist movements like Catalan separatism, and democratic backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe are all examples of this trend. Fuelled by anti-globalism and identity politics, tribalization draws up the drawbridge to the world, prioritising cultural differences over dialogue, collaboration, and universal liberal values.
Tribalism, argues Marlene Wind, is a dangerous road to follow. With this trend, democracy itself is put in jeopardy. Tribalism is not merely about being pro-nation, anti-EU, and anti-global. In many instances, it is a larger and more fundamental movement that dismisses the liberal democratic principles once universally upheld.
At a time when former defenders of liberal values are increasingly silent or have even joined the growing chorus of tribalists, this book is a wake-up call. Drawing on a wide range of examples from the UK, the US, Spain, Hungary, and Poland, Wind highlights the dangers of identity politics and calls on people to stand up for democracy and the rule of law.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
The Tribalization of Europe has been praised as a rigorous analysis and urgent defence of liberal democracy. Francis Fukuyama describes it as "a hard-headed analysis of narrow populist nationalism, and an impassioned defence of the liberal values needed to sustain a democratic future." Carlos Closa calls it "an eloquent, magisterial and compelling warning" about the dangers of extreme majoritarianism and tribalism eroding shared democratic values.
