In this sparkling companion to the middle-grade fantasy The Gilded Girl, Maeve and Izzy must adjust to a new life together, but when Maeve's magic goes awry and their school is in danger, they'll need to lean on each other to make things right.
The Tarnished Garden transports readers to the Manhattan School for Magic, the newest kindling school in New York. Maeve O'Donnell finds herself at this prestigious institution, though she doubts she deserves her place there. Her sister, Izzy, is one of the school's founders and a beacon of inspiration for those who can now kindle. However, Maeve struggles to control her own magic and constantly fears someoneโespecially Izzyโwill discover her secret.
Maeve's worst fears are realised when her magic goes awry, causing havoc at the new school and tarnishing Izzy's reputation. In her quest to mend what she's broken, Maeve stumbles upon a mysterious garden in the Tarnish neighborhood, a place where her magic surprisingly flourishes. As she nurtures her magic and confidence, Maeve befriends others who find sanctuary in the garden, including a litter of talking kittens (house dragons, naturally) in need of Maeve's help to locate their missing mother.
Yet, danger looms as another party seeks the kittens with little regard for the number of magical sites they raze in their quest to halt the spread of magic. In this pivotal moment, Maeve's unstable magic might be the key to saving her sister's school from being extinguished forever.
