The Songbird and the Heart of Stone by Carissa Broadbent unfolds the gripping tale of Mische, a woman whose life is irrevocably transformed when she is forcibly Turned into a vampire. Stripped of her humanity, her home, and most painfully, the love of the sun god to whom she had dedicated her existence, Mische's world is plunged into darkness and despair. Condemned to death for slaying the vampire prince who Turned her, redemption seems a distant dream.

In a twist of fate, Mische's execution is halted by Asar, the bastard prince of the House of Shadow. Bearing scars of a past as brutal as his own, Asar offers her a glimmer of hope. He saves her, but at a price: she must accompany him on a perilous mission to the underworld, tasked with the resurrection of the god of death himself.

However, this mission is cloaked in deceit. Mische's sun god, in a clandestine encounter, commands her to assist Asar only to betray him by assassinating the very god they seek to revive. Torn between her loyalty to the sun god and her own chance at redemption, Mische finds herself at a moral crossroads.

The journey to the underworld is fraught with peril. Mische and Asar confront daunting trials, terrifying beasts, and the haunting spectres of their own pasts. Amidst these challenges, a forbidden attraction burgeons between them, a bond that risks the ire of divine forces. As their connection deepens, the line between salvation and damnation blurs.

With each step closer to the underworld, the stakes escalate. The realm of the dead tightens its grip, and the anger of the gods grows ever more palpable. Ultimately, Mische faces an impossible choice: the renewed grace of the sun god or succumbing to the seductive call of the darkness. Her decision will shape the fate of gods and mortals alike, cementing her path either towards redemption or eternal damnation.

The Songbird and the Heart of Stone is a spellbinding blend of dark fantasy and romance, exploring themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Carissa Broadbent crafts a compelling narrative that entices readers into a world where love and betrayal dance on the edge of a dagger, and the fate of gods hinges on the choices of one lost soul.

About the Author

Carissa Broadbent has been concerning teachers and parents with mercilessly grim tales since she was roughly nine years old. Since then, her stories have gotten (slightly) less depressing and (hopefully a lot?) more readable. Today, she writes novels that blend epic fantasy plots with a heaping dose of romance. She lives with her husband, her son, one very badly behaved rabbit and one perpetually sceptical cat in Rhode Island.
