The Roman Mysteries: The Thieves of Ostia introduces us to Flavia Gemina, a brilliant young girl who possesses a talent for solving mysteries. Living in Ostia, the bustling port of Rome, in AD79, she is the daughter of a ship's captain. Flavia surrounds herself with a trio of unique friends who aid her in her sleuthing adventures.
Among her companions are Jonathan, a Jewish boy who harbours a secret Christian faith; Nubia, an African slave girl; and Lupus, a mute beggar boy. Together, they embark on a mission to uncover the identity of the culprit responsible for decapitating watchdogs that protect the citizens' homes and unravel the motives behind such a heinous act.
Caroline Lawrence is a remarkable storyteller, crafting narratives that are both readable and engaging. Her characters resonate with children, and her vivid depiction of daily life in Ancient Rome provides a rich backdrop to the tale. Yet, at its core, The Thieves of Ostia is a classic whodunnit, filled with unexpected twists, cliffhangers, and a mystery that invites readers to solve alongside the characters.
