The Oresteia
A king's decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution.
In The Oresteia—the only trilogy in Greek drama which survives from antiquity—Aeschylus took as his subject the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos.
Moving from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, its spirit of struggle and regeneration is eternal.

A recent translation of The Oresteia has been praised for conveying the timeless power of this classic work more vividly than others. It is seen as a triumph in modern translation, capturing both the Greek essence and the profound genius of Aeschylus, allowing contemporary readers to appreciate its grandeur and depth.
