The New Gender Paradox

Fragmentation and Persistence of the Binary
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The New Gender Paradox explores the simultaneous fragmentation and persistence of the gender binary in Western societies. Judith Lorber, a leading sociologist of gender, examines how multiple genders, gender-neutral pronouns, and other forms of degendering challenge the traditional two-gender structure. Despite these changes, the enduring dominance of men’s power and privilege remains, alongside the sustained need to recognise women’s achievements, particularly those from marginalised groups. The book concludes by analysing why a gender revolution has yet to occur and argues that degendering could significantly advance gender equality.

Today, in Western countries, we are seeing both the fragmentation of the gender binary (the division of the social world into two and only two genders) and its persistence. Multiple genders, gender-neutral pronouns and bathrooms, X designations, and other manifestations of degendering are becoming common, and yet the two-gender structure of our social world persists. Underneath the persistence of the binary and its discriminatory norms and expectations lurks the continuance of men’s power and privilege. So there is the continued need to valorise the accomplishments of women, especially those of denigrated groups.

This succinct and thoughtful book by one of the world’s foremost sociologists of gender shines a light on both sides of this paradox – processes in the fragmentation of gender that are undermining the binary and processes in the performance of gender that reinforce the binary, and the pros and cons of each. The conclusion of the book discusses why we haven’t had a gender revolution and how degendering would go a long way in creating gender equality.

The New Gender Paradox offers a comprehensive exploration of these dual dynamics, making it an essential read for those interested in understanding the complexities of gender today.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised for its clarity and relevance, The New Gender Paradox is described by Social Forces as offering a blueprint of contemporary gender institutions and highlighting a path towards equality. International Sociology notes the book's concise explanation of gender in feminist studies and emphasises that simply fragmenting gender will not end patriarchy. Cecilia L. Ridgeway from Stanford University calls it a much-needed and clear-sighted assessment of the gender binary’s dynamics and its implications for reducing inequality.
