The Monster on Chinese New Year's Eve depicts Chinese New Year's Eve as the most important day of the year for the Chinese people, when the whole family gathers around the table to celebrate a reunion. However, a long time ago, on this day, people used to flee their homes and hide in the mountains and forests.

This was because a huge monster named Xi, who dwelled at the bottom of the ocean, would come to the shore to search for food. People were terrified of being killed by him.

A small but powerful immortal called Nian, living in the sky, learns of the people's worries. He decides to descend to earth to protect them from Xi. Nian assures everyone that their homes are safe under his protection, but nobody believes that this little immortal can vanquish the enormous monster. Everyone leaves their homes, with the exception of one disabled blind old lady.

Nian assists the old lady by decorating her house and preparing a large meal for her. At midnight, Xi approaches the village, seeking food. It heads towards the old lady's house, as it is the only lit dwelling in the village. What can Nian do to drive Xi away from the village? Can he save the old lady and all the villagers?
